Pozzolans are known to possess high pozzolanic activity that enhances the long-term engineering properties of concrete due to the consumption of calcium hydroxide and the consequent formation of the calcium-silicate-hydrate gels within the cement matrix. Although the key factors that affect the pozzolanic activity such as the chemical composition, amorphousness, and fineness are commonly known in literature, there is a growing need to further gain an insight into the factors that govern this activity in a more comprehensive approach. The aim of this empirical study is to develop optimal replacement models considering factors of pozzolanic activity. To accomplish this, the database approach was adopted. The database, consisting of a large number of data points gathered from the literature, is established to determine the optimum replacement levels of pozzolanic materials in concrete. These parameters are aided to identify the boundary conditions and hence enable the potential concrete models to be generated for the sustainability assessment of concrete with incorporating pozzolans. The sustainability indices and CO2 emissions assessment of the concrete comprising pozzolans are performed with high confidence by using the determined boundary conditions for both maximum and minimum replacement levels. The incorporation of pozzolans in concrete has been shown to significantly decrease the carbon footprint and the associated human eco-toxicity as well as the ozone depletion. Furthermore, the study contributes to the generation of greener construction materials, and it offers a cleaner disposal route for the pozzolans compared to the traditional waste management alternatives.
