Broadband terahertz modulators using self-gated graphene capacitors
Kakenov, Nurbek; Balci, Osman; Polat, Emre O.; Altan, Hakan; KOCABAŞ, COŞKUN (2015-09-01)
We demonstrate a terahertz intensity modulator using a graphene supercapacitor which consists of two large-area graphene electrodes and an electrolyte medium. The mutual electrolyte gating between the graphene electrodes provides very efficient electrostatic doping with Fermi energies of 1 eV and a charge density of 8 x 10(13) cm(-2). We show that the graphene supercapacitor yields more than 50% modulation between 0.1 and 1.4 THz with operation voltages less than 3 V. The low insertion losses, high modulati...
Broadband THz Modulators Based on Multilayer Graphene on PVC
KAYA, Emine; Kakenov, Nurbek; Kocabas, Coskun; Altan, Hakan; Esentürk, Okan (2016-09-30)
In this study we present the direct terahertz timedomain spectroscopic measurement of CVD-grown multilayer graphene (MLG) on PVC substrate with an electrically tunable Fermi level. In a configuration consisting MLG and injected organic dopant, the transmitted intensity loss of terahertz radiation was observed with an applied voltage between 0 and 3.5 V.We showed that MLG on PVC devices provided approximately 100 % modulation between 0.2 and 1.5 THz at preferentially low operation voltage of ca. 3V. The obse...
Broadband Impedance Transformation by Defected Dielectric on Microstrip Lines
Kaya, Tevfik; Nesimoglu, Tayfun (2018-11-02)
In this work, a different approach to achieve a desired characteristic impedance value on microstrips is presented. In standard microwave circuits using microstrip lines, the dielectric thickness is same and uniform across the whole circuit. In this paper, it is proposed to modify the dielectric thickness to achieve a certain design goal by creating variations in the characteristic impedance of the microstrip transmission line without changing the width of the line. The proposed approach is applied to a mul...
Broadband LWIR and MWIR metamaterial absorbers with a simple design topology: almost perfect absorption and super-octave band operation in MWIR band
ÜSTÜN, Kadir; Sayan, Gönül (The Optical Society, 2017-07-01)
Infrared absorbers are essential structures in the design of thermal emitters and thermal infrared imagers. In this study, we propose simple topologies of wideband metamaterial absorbers operating in the long-wave infrared or in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum where the atmosphere shows transparent behavior. Suggested metamaterial absorbers are mostly thin structures that consist of three functional layers from top to bottom: a periodically patterned metal layer, a p...
Broadband One Way Propagation via Dielectric Waveguides with Unequal Effective Index
Oner, B. B.; Ustun, K.; KURT, HAMZA; OKYAY, Ali Kemal; Sayan, Gönül (2014-10-16)
We present an efficient approach for broad band one way propagation of light by parallel and unequal dielectric waveguides leading different effective phase shifts. Three dimensional numerical simulations show that 30% operating bandwidth is achieved.
