Does Fiscal Decentralization Promote Fiscal Discipline?
Akin, Zafer; Bulut-Cevik, Zeynep B.; NEYAPTI, ŞEN BİLİN (2016-03-01)
We investigate the efficiency and equity implications of a redistributive rule that takes into account both local tax collection efforts and deviation of local incomes from respective targets under alternative fiscal mechanisms. We show that, if the general budget constraint is binding, the proposed transfer rule leads to higher fiscal discipline under fiscal decentralization (FD) than under centralized redistribution. Although the centralized decision yields better income distribution than FD, FD also impr...
Does foreign trade eliminate inequality among factor incomes? The test of the Stolper-Samuelson Theorem on Turkish economy
Akıncı, Merter (ODTÜ İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, 2021-6-31)
The main motivation of the paper is to investigate the validity of the Stolper-Samuelson theorem using non-linear (asymmetric) ARDL (NARDL) analysis in the period from 1980 to 2019 in Turkish economy. The results of short and long-term analysis show that the Stolper- Samuelson theorem is not valid in Turkey. In other words, it is observed that foreign trade increases the income of capital, scarce factor, while it decreases the income of labor, abundant factor. Therefore, it has been noted...
Does Income Inequality Derive the Separatist Terrorism in Turkey?
Derin Güre, Pınar (Informa UK Limited, 2014-05-04)
Separatist terrorism has been a severe problem for Turkey since the mid-1980s. The conventional wisdom contends that economic deprivation in southeastern Turkey is the fundamental reason for the long-running battle against the Kurdish rebels. Considering that there is limited empirical literature on the roots of terrorism in Turkey, yielding conflicting results about the claim that the main cause of terrorism is deprived economic conditions, this study aims to answer whether there is a causal relationship b...
Does Credit Composition have Asymmetric Effects on Income Inequality? New Evidence from Panel Data
Seven, Ünal; Kilinc, Dilara; Coskun, Yener (MDPI AG, 2018-9-25)
This paper studied the effects of credit to private non-financial sectors on income inequality. In particular, we focused on the distinction between household and firm credits, and investigated whether these two types of credit had adverse effects on income inequality. Employing cross-section augmented cointegrating regressions and using balanced panel data for 30 developed and developing countries over the period from 1995 to 2013, we showed that firm credit reduced income inequality, whereas there was no ...
Does foreign portfolio investment strengthen stock-commodity markets connection?
ORDU AKKAYA, BEYZA MİNA; Soytaş, Uğur (Elsevier BV, 2020-03-01)
The heavy influx of financial institutions into commodity markets is referred to as financialization of commodities and this phenomenon argues that financial institutions increase the connectedness between commodity and stock markets through simultaneous investing. In this paper, employing Treasury International Capital data by US Treasury to proxy for institutional investment, we investigate the role of foreign portfolio investors on increasing spillovers between commodity and stock markets. We include dev...
