Prediction of flow and bank erosion in the Sacramento River

Results of two-dimensional (depth averaged) and three dimensional computations of a 1750m reach of the Sacramento River are compared with velocity data obtained in a large-scale, distorted physical model of the same reach. The aim was to predict the level of modeling required to predict the occurrence of bank erosion observed in the field. Further results are presented which show the outcome of deploying 5 groins to inhibit bank erosion upstream of a bridge abutment. The simulations are also compared with experimental data to assess the performance of alternative shear formulae. Truncation errors are estimated using two alternative techniques. The results suggest that the occurrence and mitigation of bank erosion in large natural river systems can be predicted to an acceptable degree of accuracy. © 2007 ASCE.

PREDICTION OF SEISMIC ENERGY DISSIPATION IN SDOF SYSTEMS
Nurtuğ, Alphan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (1995-11-01)
A simple analytical procedure is developed for calculating the seismic energy dissipated by a linear SDOF system under an earthquake ground excitation. The ground excitation is specified by its pseudo‐velocity spectra and effective duration whereas the SDOF system is defined by its natural period of vibration and viscous damping ratio. However, the derived relationship for the energy dissipation demand under an earthquake excitation is sensitive neither to the viscous damping ratio nor the ductility ratio w...
Assessment of synthetic ground motion records obtained from alternative simulation techniques in nonlinear time history analyses of multi-storey frame buildings: A case study
Karim Zadeh Naghshineh, Shaghayegh; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Yakut, Ahmet (2014-07-02)
Full time series of ground acceleration are required for nonlinear time history analyses to evaluate the dynamic response of a structure under earthquake excitations. In regions with sparse ground motion data, alternative ground motion simulation techniques are used to generate acceleration time series with varying levels of accuracy. While using simulated records for engineering purposes, it is critical to investigate the efficiency of these records in predicting the real engineering demands. For this purp...

Simulation of surface waves generated by a rapid rise of a block at the sea bottom
Şenol, Nalan; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
A mathematical model is developed for investigating time dependent surface deformations of a hydrostatic water volume, when it is subjected to a sudden partial rise of the sea bottom. In the model, 2-dimensional, compressible, and viscous Navier-Stokes equations are solved by Marker and Cell (MAC) method. Variable mesh size in both horizontal and vertical directions with a staggered grid arrangement is used. Limited compressibility model is utilized for pressure. Various computational tests are done for the...
Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV
Chatrchyan, S.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2012-04-01)
Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.44 and transverse energies E-T between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon E-T-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucl...
