Currently, relatively limited selected-response tests are available to measure high school students' geometry knowledge. By adhering to Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing set by the American Educational Research Association (AERA et al., 2014), the current study seeks to develop an objective type of selected-response test for assessing 11-grade students' declarative knowledge of triangles, specifically definitions of types of triangles, congruent and similar triangles and identification of triangles and then determine the validity evidence for the test (DKTT) based on test content, internal structure, and reliability. Four factors emerged from using the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) for the analysis of test dimensionality. These factors were named 'Identification of Triangles (Factor 1)', 'Definitions of Congruent and Similar Triangles (Factor 2)', Minimal Definitions of Types of Triangles (Factor 3)', and 'Non-minimal Definitions of Types of Triangles with Auxiliary Elements (Factor 4)'. The Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients for the entire test were 0.71 and 0.75, respectively. This test will contribute to thoroughly measuring the students' knowledge of definitions of types of triangles, congruent and similar triangles, and identification of triangles, measuring students' declarative knowledge of triangles.

Development and validation of nature of science instrument for elementary school students
HACIEMİNOĞLU, ESME; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; ERTEPINAR, HAMİDE (2014-05-01)
The purposes of this study were to develop and validate an instrument for assessing elementary students’ nature of science (NOS) views and to explain the elementary school students’ NOS views, in terms of varying grade levels and gender. The sample included 782 students enrolled in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Exploratory factor analysis factor structures and confirmatory factor analysis fit indices confirmed the existence of the hypothesised four dimensions in the structure of the nature of science i...
An investigation of development of prospective elementary teachers’ knowledge to teach algebra in early grades through case discussions
Öztürk, Nejla; İşler Baykal, Işıl; Department of Mathematics Education (2021-9-3)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of prospective elementary teachers’ subject matter and pedagogical content knowledge for teaching algebra in elementary grades. Prospective elementary teachers attended a 5-week (10 hours) intervention as part of a method course, Teaching Mathematics I, that was designed based on case discussions. The participants of the study were nine third-year students who were enrolled in the course in the 2020-2021 fall semester as a must course of the under...
Development of a test for assessing teachers’ mathematical content knowledge for teaching geometric measurement at elementary grade level
Esen, Yasemin; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Çapa Aydın, Yeşim; Department of Elementary Education (2013)
The purpose of this research was to develop and provide evidence for the construct validity of an instrument designed to measure pre-service mathematics teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) measurement specifically on the concepts of length, area and volume. The test is referred as the Test of Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching Measurement (TMK-M).It was aimed to contribute to fill the gaps for lack of valid measures to be used for assessing elementary mathematics pre-service teachers’ MKT. T...
Investigation of pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs about using concrete models in teaching mathematics
Pişkin, Mutlu; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Bulut, Safure; Department of Educational Sciences (2010)
The main purpose of the study was to investigate pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ personal efficacy beliefs and outcome expectancies about using concrete models in teaching mathematics. Data were collected from the pre-service teachers in the middle of the spring semester of 2008-2009. Pre-service teachers were junior students enrolled in elementary mathematics teaching program at a public university. Six instructional sessions based on using concrete models in teaching mathematics were carried ...
Evolution of Mathematics Teachers' Pedagogical Knowledge when They are Teaching through Modeling
Yenmez, Arzu Aydogan; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Alacaci, Cengiz; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Çetinkaya, Bülent (2017-01-01)
Use of mathematical modeling in mathematics education has been receiving significant attention as a way to develop students. mathematical knowledge and skills. As effective use of modeling in classes depends on the competencies of teachers we need to know more about the nature of teachers. knowledge to use modeling in mathematics education and how this knowledge evolves. The aim of this study is to investigate how teachers. pedagogical knowledge to use modeling in the classroom is formed and modified throug...
