Communicating uncertainty is a challenging task. Personal differences such as culture, cognitive load and even feelings of the user can impact the interpretation of an uncertain situation. Decision support models such as Bayesian networks can aid dealing with uncertainty. However, the outputs of these models are probability distributions, their interpretation can be challenging and visualisations can help with this task. The aim of the study is to investigate how effective visual aids communicating BN predictions are and users preferences regarding these visual aids. Model's prediction and performance are needed to communicate BN predictions. Hence, in this study both model's prediction and performance are investigated. BN model that has been developed to make predictions on a medical condition namely, Trauma Induced Coagulopathy (TIC BN) are used as a case study (Perkins et al., 2020). Our results show that participants' risk understanding and their model performance evaluations are affected by the visual aid used at different risk levels. Results also reveal that while participants' visual aid preferences for model's prediction did not differ, the most preferred visual aid for model's performance is icon array.

A risk management approach for acquisition of software intensive systems in the Turkish Army.
Saylan, Necip; Demirös, Elif; Demirös, Onur; Department of Information Systems (2002)
The current techniques of risk assessment rely on checklists and human expertise. This constitutes a rigorous approach only when the people are experts on risk assessment. This thesis introduces a formal method and addresses the necessity of the identification and analysis of the risk. During implementation of risk management process, risk assessment will be discussed within an acquisition of software intensive systems in the Turkish Army. This thesis includes a survey and comparison of other software risk ...
The impact of computer-mediated immediate feedback on developing oral presentation skills: An exploratory study in virtual reality
Van Ginkel, Stan; Ruiz, Dominic; Mononen, Asko; Karaman, Abdullah Cendel; de Keijzer, Ander; Sitthiworachart, Jirarat (Wiley, 2020-06-01)
Feedback plays a central role in learning. Crucial to this is the nature and timing of the feedback. This experimental study explores the efficacy of immediate computer-mediated feedback within a virtual reality environment designed to facilitate the development of pre-university students' presentation skills. Two conditions were established to assess the efficacy: immediate computer-mediated feedback; a control condition of delayed expert-mediated feedback. Results showed improvement but no statistically r...
A hybrid approach for predicting customers' individual purchase behavior
Peker, Serhat; Koçyiğit, Altan; Eren, Pekin Erhan (2017-01-01)
Purpose - Predicting customers' purchase behaviors is a challenging task. The literature has introduced the individual-level and the segment-based predictive modeling approaches for this purpose. Each method has its own advantages and drawbacks, and performs in certain cases. The purpose of this paper is to propose a hybrid approach which predicts customers' individual purchase behaviors and reduces the limitations of these two methods by combining the advantages of them.
Bayes İstatistik Tekniğiyle Pulsarların ve Beyaz Cücelerin Güç Spektrumlarının Oluşturulması
Baykal, Altan(2016-12-31)
Bu projede Simon Vaughan (2005, 2009) tarfından geliştirilen ve Daniela Huppenkothen (2013) tarafında Magnetarların kısa süreli patlamalarda yarı periyodik salınımların keşfi için kullanılan Bayes istatistik tekniklerini. Yüksek kütleli kütle aktarımı yapan pulsarlar ve beyaz cüceler üzerine uygulamak istemekteyiz. Bu teknik sayesinde kısa sürede oluşup kaybolan yarı periyodik salınımları keşfetmemiz mümkün olacaktır. Bayes tekniği diğer fizik alanlarında kullanımaktadır. Bu önemli tekniğin öğrenilip uy...
A search for an integral view of law, the state & human rights: comparing hans kelsen’s positivism, carl schmitt’s realism & otfried höffe’s rationalism
Demiray, Mehmet Ruhi; Deveci, Cem; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2010)
The primary objective of this work is to develop the (rationalist) thesis of integrity or the integral view in the realm of legal-political thought. This view consists in the elaboration of the essential-conceptual interdependency of law, the political authority (i.e. the state) and the universal moral standpoint of justice (i.e. the standpoint encapsulated by the idea of human rights in our age) in a way avoiding the shortfalls of legal-moralism illustrated by the natural-law-theories. The rationalist thes...
