Impact analysis of flood in Accra, Ghana
Asumadu-Sarkodie, Samuel; Owusu, Phebe Asantewaa; Rufangura, Patrick (2017-6-19)
Within the past decades, flooding has become a global pandemic, which hampers economic and social development. This global phenomenon has led to loss of lives and economic damages in many countries including Ghana. On June 3rd 2015, Accra, Ghana's capital experienced an unprecedented flash flood event, coupled with an explosion at a Goil filling station that resulted in a death toll of over 152 lives. It is therefore necessary to explore new ideas and approaches that can be incorporated to existing structur...
Extreme waves at Filyos, southern Black Sea
Bilyay, E.; Ozbahceci, B. O.; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (Copernicus GmbH, 2011-01-01)
A wave measurement project was carried out for a new port planned in Filyos, in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The measurement at a depth of 12.5 m lasted for a period of two years and 7949 records were obtained. During the analysis, it was noticed that there were 209 records in which H/H(s) ratio was higher than 2.0. These higher waves in a record are called extreme waves in this study. Although the purpose of wave measurement is not to investigate extreme waves, it is believed that studying these...
Extreme precipitation and drought monitoring in northeastern China using general circulation models and pan evaporation-based drought indices
Faiz, Muhammad Abrar; Liu, Dong; Fu, Qiang; Wrzesinski, Dariusz; Baig, Faisal; Nabi, Ghulam; Khan, Muhammad Imran; Li, Tianxiao; Cui, Song (2018-01-01)
The evaluation of precipitation extremes and the usage of appropriate drought indices are very important for assessment of natural disasters (i.e. floods and drought). For this purpose, we calculated values of indices that reflect precipitation extremes and 3 drought indices, i.e. the composite index (CI), standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), and reconnaissance drought index (RDI), with reformulation of pan evaporation and Penman-Monteith equations (denoted as CI-Pan, RDI-Pan, RDI-PM,...
Seismic vulnerability of masonry structures in Turkey
Ceran, Hasan Burak; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
This study focuses on the evaluation of seismic safety of masonry buildings in Turkey by using fragility curves. Fragility curves for masonry buildings are generated by two behavior modes for load bearing walls: in-plane and out-of-plane. By considering the previous research and site investigations, four major parameters have been used in order to classify masonry buildings with in-plane behavior mode. These are number of stories, strength of load-bearing wall material, regularity in plan and the arrangemen...
Active Faults' Geometry in the Gulf of Aqaba, Southern Dead Sea Fault, Illuminated by Multibeam Bathymetric Data
Ribot, Matthieu; Klinger, Yann; Jónsson, Sigurjón; Avşar, Ulaş; Pons-Branchu, Edwige; Matrau, Rémi; Mallon, Francis L. (2021-04-01)
Detailed knowledge of fault geometry is important for accurate seismic hazard assessment. The Gulf of Aqaba, which corresponds to the southern termination of the 1200-km-long Dead Sea fault system, remains one of the least known parts of this plate boundary fault, in large part due to its location offshore. Classically, the Gulf of Aqaba has been described as a succession of three pull-apart basins. Here, building on a new multibeam bathymetric survey of the Gulf of Aqaba, we provide details about the geome...
