Effectiveness of set accelerating admixtures with different cement types
Üstüner, Didem Tuğba; Tokyay, Mustafa; Department of Chemical Engineering (2009)
In this study, effects of different carbon sources and their feeding strategies on recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) production by Pichia pastoris were investigated by means of cell growth, recombinant protein production and expression levels of hGH and alcohol oxidase (AOX) genes. In this content, firstly, the strain to be used for high level rhGH production was selected between the two phenotypes, i.e., P. pastoris hGH-Mut+ and P. pastoris hGH-MutS. In this selection both phenotypes were compared in...
Effectiveness of treatment methods on polypropylene fibres incorporated in cement mortars
Ince, Ceren (2019-06-01)
Fibre reinforcements are often used in cementitious materials to provide enhanced strength. However, the surface smoothness and inert chemical nature of polypropylene fibres result in an insufficient fibre-matrix bonding interface and hence lead to poor mechanical properties of these materials. Two distinct treatment methods, namely, porofication method and sulfuric acid-dichromate treatment method, are adopted to assess the effectiveness of these techniques on fibre-matrix interface properties. The paper b...

Effectiveness of microplastics removal in wastewater treatment plants: A critical analysis of wastewater treatment processes
Kurt, Zöhre; Özdemir, Irmak ; James R., Arthur M. (2022-05-01)
Microplastics (MPs) are among the contaminants that have been of considerable concern in the last decade. One of the most significant contributors to MPs pollution in the environment is the effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Previous studies showed that high MPs removal could be achieved in WWTPs. However, the parameters affecting MPs removal performances have not yet been analyzed for actual WWTPs. This review critically evaluates the physical, chemical, and biological treatmen...
EFFECTIVENESS OF OIL-SHALE ASH IN REDUCING ALKALI-SILICA REACTION EXPANSIONS
YEGINOBALI, A; SMADI, M; KHEDAYWI, T (1993-04-01)
The ash obtained from central Jordanian oil shales was subjected to standard tests to evaluate its effectiveness as an admixture in reducing mortar or concrete expansion due to alkali-silica reactions. According to the results obtained with Pyrex glass aggregate, the ash only partially complied with the specified requirements but still performed better than two locally available pozzolanic admixtures. The ash was also helpful in reducing the expansion of mortars containing a local chert aggregate. Consideri...
