Middle East Technical University Institute of Marine Sciences or METU IMS is an institute established to conduct research in the seas and provide graduate education. IMS was founded on the Erdemli Campus of Middle East Technical University in Erdemli, Mersin in 1975 that lies in the 45 km west of Mersin city center in East Mediterranean region. It is the second outer campus of METU outside Ankara, after Gaziantep Campus (later became Gaziantep University) which was established in 1973. The campus includes approximately 700 m² laboratories and 660 thousand m² areas surrounded by lemon trees. Also, 2 Research Vessels and a port with employees, and dwellings for students are within the borders of the campus.
