Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi (Hezarfen means “a thousand sciences” polymath) was a scientist. He was inspired by Ismail Cevheri, one of the 10th century scholars who carried out experiments on flying long before him. He studied the discoveries of Cevheri and the way birds fly, and developed artificial wings. To measure their strength, he did flying experiments in Okmeydani Square by drawing circles in the air. In 1632, he flew from the top of Galata Tower with the first wind of southwester and landed in Doğancılar Square in Üsküdar which is 3358 meters away. This event had repercussions in the Ottoman Empire and Europe.
