Contemporary approaches to urban planning often ignore the transformative effects of modernity, post-modernity, and globalization on cities and places. The desire for planning practices to remain static, their inability to adapt to change, and, fundamentally, their disregard for the experience of place, result in the loss of meaningful places. In this context, this thesis presents a theoretical investigation of the intricate relationship between place attachment and well-being, delving into the multifaceted dimensions of human experience and the significance of the place. With an emphasis on the concepts of place, this study unravels the issues that bind individuals to their surroundings, exploring the similarities and differences between place attachment and well-being processes. The thesis employs an in-depth exploration of existing theories, studies, and frameworks to unveil the nuanced interplay between place attachment and well-being. By integrating diverse perspectives, the thesis identifies approximately 65 significant indicators and builds a theoretical framework that includes six categories the sense of the self, needs, perceptive cognitional, affective emotional, behavioral, and social. The findings highlight commonalities and differences. Both literatures emphasize the importance of self-identity, perceptions, thoughts, memories, behaviors, and emotions. The findings also highlight the significance of culture in both place attachment and well-being, related to self-identity, social relations, beliefs-norms, and sense of community. By juxtaposing the theoretical framework with practical insights gained from the exemplified focus group study that adopts the fuzzy cognitive mapping technique, this thesis aims to provide a better understanding of place attachment and its possible impacts on individuals’ well-being for practitioners, policymakers, and designers.
