One of the main objectives of seismic isolation is to minimize structural damage after major earthquakes. The functionality of hospital buildings is particularly important after earthquakes. Therefore, it is desired that the superstructure remains elastic after major earthquakes. In line with this, regulations suggest the use of low response modification factors. In the Turkish Seismic Code (TSC 2018), this coefficient is recommended as 1.2. Considering that the inelastic behavior of isolated structures is still a concept under research, designing structures without applying reduction to earthquake loads can play a significant role in minimizing structural damage after major earthquakes. However, it is expected that designing under unreduced earthquake loads would result in increased dimensions and reinforcement in the building's structural elements. In this study, a comparison is made between the design of columns of an 8-story hospital building with base isolators based on reduced and unreduced earthquake loads within the scope of TSC 2018. An increase of 4.8% in the column longitudinal reinforcement and 2.0% in the column concrete volume is observed. Additionally, a 0.26% increase in total concrete volume isvi calculated from the finite element analysis model. The estimated overall cost increase is 0.24 % due to the longitudinal rebar quantity increase.
