The present study investigated the SRL strategies used by students studying at top ranking science high schools of Türkiye, the domain specificity of the self-regulated learning process, SRL-related beliefs of teachers, and instructional as well as student-related factors promoting the development of SRL strategies. The study had a mixed-method design. Using the cluster sampling method, quantitative data of the study were collected via The Self-regulatory Strategies Scale and via Self-Regulated Learning Teacher Belief Scale. Qualitative data of the study were collected from the students and teachers via interviews. In total, the SRSS was administered to 857 students, while SRLTB was administered to 106 teachers. Besides, 15 teachers and 15 students were interviewed. The results of the study showed that SRL strategies such as goal setting, forming multiple motivational beliefs, strategic planning are the first steps of SRL. In addition, the findings of the study showed that SRL has both general and domain-specific aspects. Also, the teachers working at these schools were found to have advocating beliefs of self-regulation. In line with this result, it was revealed that there are several instructional factors affecting the development of SRL, such as teaching SRL skills, keeping a record of students’ learning, building rapport with students, and generating academic interest in students. Finally, student-related factors such as having parents or siblings coaching the SRL process were found to be effective in the promotion of SRL. Also, self-efficacy beliefs and critical thinking skills were found to be influential in the SRL development.
