Parent-child reminiscing and play interactions fundamentally serve developmental milestones regarding the child's language, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Both parent gender and child gender are closely related to the emotional component of parent-child reminiscing and play dynamics. The current study investigated how triadic play between parents and children might relate to triadic memory conversations about emotionally charged shared past events. How the parent’s gender, the child’s gender, and parental gender ideology can potentially affect this relation was also examined. One hundred and nine families (327 participants) were selected for the study. The demographics form and Social Roles Questionnaire (SRQ) were administered. Families were given a triadic play task called Lausanne Trilogue Play (LTP) and a memory talk task in which they discussed a shared event experienced in the near past. For the play task, Family Alliance Assessment Scales (FAAS) and for the memory task, the number of total words, total and unique emotions, and conversational turn-takings were coded by multiple coders. Afterward, data were analyzed by a set of independent t-tests, 2 X 2 Mixed Design ANOVAs, and hierarchical regression analyses. Findings showed significant gender differences in both contexts, but there was no evidence for the impact of gender ideology. Results were mainly explained and discussed in Turkey's cultural context encouraging parents to raise well-adapted children to society, consistent with the expected gender roles and stereotypes.
