PARENTAL SATISFACTION AND ENGAGEMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF HOME LITERACY ENVIRONMENT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the intricate relationships between parents’ satisfaction with their children’s educational experiences, parent engagement in early childhood education, the home literacy environment (HLE), and household income within the context of Türkiye. Specifically, the study aims to explore the mediating role of the HLE in the relationship between parents’ satisfaction and engagement, and to comprehend the moderating role of household income on this relationship. Based on a sample size of 660 parents from Afyonkarahisar and its suburbs, significant positive correlations were found among parents’ satisfaction, HLE, and parent engagement. A path model was created to test predefined hypotheses, revealing that parents’ satisfaction positively influenced both parent engagement and HLE. The HLE was found to partially mediate the relationship between parents’ satisfaction and parent engagement. Household income emerged as a moderating variable in the effect of HLE on parent engagement and between parents’ satisfaction and HLE for certain income groups but was not significant in most paths. The analysis also revealed variations in parent engagement and HLE across different income levels. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of parents’ satisfaction and the HLE in shaping parent engagement in early childhood education, with variations across income levels. These insights hold substantive implications for a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including educators, administrators, parents, and curriculum developers, thereby creating a foundation for further exploration and practical applications in this domain.
