This research thesis analyzes the relation between the EU energy policy and the geopolitics in the Eastern Mediterranean by explaining on the one hand, energy economics in the Eastern Mediterranean, discovered energy reserves and gas transport projects in the region; on the other hand, energy geopolitics in the Eastern Mediterranean, the evolution of the Eastern Mediterranean energy crisis and the challenges of energy geopolitics for the EU’s policy in the Eastern Mediterranean. Considering both economic and geopolitical challenges in the region, the thesis also explains ongoing regional questions for years apart from the energy issue in the region. Contrary to the views of some scholars who explain the EU’s energy policy in the Eastern Mediterranean region by considering energy dynamics and geopolitical dynamics separated from each other, this thesis argues that the EU’s role in the energy geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean region could be understood better through a comprehensive perspective which considers energy dynamics and geopolitical dynamics as an integral and coherent part of a single geopolitical reality.
