The nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom model developed in a previous work for gear-shaft-bearing systems is used to study dynamic mesh load on spur gears carried on flexible shafts and bearings. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of transverse shaft and bearing compliance on dynamic gear loads when there is backlash. This study shows that bearing and transverse shaft flexibility and their interaction with backlash type nonlinearity becomes significant at mesh mode. It is concluded that in order to study the effect of transverse shaft flexibility on gear dynamics and to make a reliable dynamic analysis around the mesh mode, the mathematical model should take both backlash and the transverse flexibility of shafts and bearings into consideration.
