Modal Analysis of Non-Proportionally Damped Mechanical Structures

1982-9
A method for the modal analysis of a non proportionally damped mechanical structure is suggested. The necessary approximations and assumptions which allow the decoupling of the motion equations are discussed. It is thereby concluded that the applicability of the method depends on having a negligible in phase component for the response at an undamped natural frequency, which usually is the case when the damping level is not high and the undamped modes are well separated. The exceptions are discussed and an approximate criterion for detecting such cases is proposed. This work also intends to give a better understanding of the uncoupled mode superposition method which ignores the off-diagonal elements of the transformed damping matrix. The suggested approach finds a wide application field in the dynamic analysis of structures with constrained or unconstrained layer damping treatments. The verification of the method is illustrated by computed results for various simple two degree-of-freedom systems.
