Nitride coatings are utilized to improve compressor discs' erosion and corrosion resistance. With the advancement in application methods, long-lasting parts have been enabled in the aerospace industry. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is the most advanced technology developed for titanium aluminum nitride coating. The versatility of PVD allows to perform coating on complex shapes such as aerospace particles with high adhesion and hardness. One of the main challenges of the PVD method for aerospace applications is optimizing the coating microstructure and parameters to satisfy the required high plastic deformation rate and corrosion resistance. Additionally, improvement in the durability of titanium aluminum nitride coating is a critical design criterion for improving the lifetime of compressor discs that could be achieved by the coating structural design. In this dissertation, the cathodic arc deposition method applied single-layer TiAlN coatings on two titanium alloy substrates. The coatings’ microstructure and mechanical properties, such as adhesion, hardness, elastic modulus, and surface roughness, were investigated. The effect of substrate on mechanical properties and coating performance was separately studied. Erosion and corrosion tests were performed to examine the behavior of the coating with specific mechanical properties. Solid particle erosion tests were performed using a 20o angle of particle impingement of the TiAlN thin film coating. Afterward, salt spray tests were performed to examine the corrosion resistance of the coatings. Finally, the overall performance of the coating in terms of expanding the life of the aerospace components was evaluated.
