The construction industry is responsible for a significant portion of waste genera-tion worldwide. Apart from its environmental impacts, such as water and air pol-lution, soil degradation, and overconsumption of natural resources, waste also burdens construction projects economically. As such, sustainable waste manage-ment approaches have become a popular topic among researchers. However, stud-ies towards developing a risk-based perspective on construction waste manage-ment are not at the desired level though there are many risk sources that may con-tribute to the variability of waste generation. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to identify critical construction waste generation risk factors. For this purpose, a survey study was conducted with 104 participants from the Turkish construction industry. 30 risk factors identified under 7 main categories were prioritized by the participants by assessing their probabilities and impacts on a 5-point Likert scale. Accordingly, (1) absence of waste management plan, (2) lack of control and su-pervision, (3) inappropriate material storage, (4) design changes, (5) absence of legal obligations (related to waste management), (6) unsuccessful planning and scheduling, (7) poor workmanship, (8) incompetent workers, (9) rework, and (10) poor attitudes of employees were determined as the most critical 10 risk factors for construction waste generation. Based on the research findings, some measures and strategies were proposed to manage waste in construction projects more ef-fectively. This research is expected to contribute to the Turkish construction in-dustry by enriching the existing body of knowledge and promoting sustainable practices.
