Investigating the relationship between children's scientific process skills and parents' scientific literacy skills

This study was designed as a quantitative study to investigate the relationship between children’s scientific process skills and parents’ scientific literacy skills. The participants of this study were 354 children enrolled in preschool education in İstanbul, along with their parents in the spring term of 2022-2023 academic year. The study was conducted using three data collection instruments. These instruments were Demographic Information Form, Scientific Process Skills Scale for 60-72-month-old Children (Özkan, 2015) and Universal Science Literacy Scale (USLS) (Çelik, 2016). The data were analyzed by using two-way between groups analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and hierarchical multiple regression (HMR). The study findings showed no statistically significant difference in children’s scientific process skills regarding gender and number of siblings they have. However, the study’s findings indicated a statistically significant difference in children’s scientific process skills based on age, favoring the older age group. In addition, parents’ scientific literacy skills levels were recorded as high and very high. Furthermore, the study findings indicated that parents’ scientific literacy skills predicted children’s scientific process skill scores after controlling for the effects of demographic characteristics, specifically education status and parents’ ages.
