This thesis examines the interaction between trade in energy goods and non-energy goods between Türkiye and the Russian Federation. The increasing economic interdependence between Türkiye and the Russian Federation following the disintegration of the Soviet Union marks the beginning of a new era between the two countries. The significant economic cooperation is mainly based on energy trade and then increasing bilateral trade, booming tourism and developing investment partnerships. This thesis will analyze the interplay between trade in energy goods and non-energy goods between two countries in the period from 1990s to 2022 with an aim to explain to what extent trade in energy goods impacts trade in non-energy goods through the lenses of Realist and Liberal International Relations (IR) theories and International Political Economy (IPE). The thesis will evaluate the trade in energy goods and partnerships by focusing on (i) supply and demand security, (ii) energy interdependence and energy diplomacy (iii) continuities and changes in trade volume and (iv) organizational models regarding the distribution and flow of gas. This thesis will also look into the transformation of the bilateral trade in goods and services trade between Türkiye and Russia by using and analyzing detailed statistics about the trends and changes in (i) two countries trade volume, (ii) trade composition and (iii) sectoral distribution of trade to evaluate the impact and dominance of energy on bilateral trade. Since trade relationship between two countries is vastly dependent on energy trade, a comparative chapter will analyze the trade relationship between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Iran with whom the trade relationship is mainly shaped by energy trade as well to explore and maintain to what extent energy trade influences bilateral trade in general. This thesis, argues that the relationship between the countries within the framework of this thesis composes of various actors, structures and determinants interacting with each other, therefore, it necessitates the adoption of a broader IR approach to maintain a comprehensive understanding and IPE provides a stronger synthesis to that aim.
