EVALUATIONS OF CONFRONTERS: IMPACT OF SEXISM LEVEL, AWARENESS, EMPATHY, AND GENDER

Particularly, women frequently face sexism in many aspects of their daily lives. The overall objective of this thesis is to investigate how individuals who confront sexism by expressing their dissatisfaction with the behavior, rather than staying silent, are perceived by others. Additionally, the aim is to comprehend whether social psychological factors like sexism type, sexism awareness, empathy, and gender have an impact on this evaluation. In this regard, a total of 316 university students composed of 224 women, 92 men (M = 22.59, SD = 5.38) completed various scales such as the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory, Empathy towards Women’s Sexism Experiences Scale, Evaluation of Confronter Scale, Sexism Awareness Scale, and Demographic Form. In terms of gender differences, the results showed that there was no difference between men and women in terms of the two sub-factors, positive or negative evaluation of the confronter evaluation scale. Compared to men, women exhibit greater empathy towards a woman who experiences sexism. Regression analyses demonstrated that, the gender of the confronter and benevolent sexism predicted both positive and negative evaluations on the confronter evaluation scale. Hostile sexism and empathy variables did not predict either of the two factors in evaluating the confronter. The results were discussed, and their relevance to existing literature was highlighted. Additionally, the study's limitations, as well as potential contributions for future research, were addressed by drawing from the existing literature.
