In recent years, with the development of science and technology, mathematical modeling, which connects mathematics to real life, has increasingly gained importance in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Thus, modeling activities began to be used as a tool for students to learn mathematics. However, to effectively teach and learn mathematics through modeling activities, these activities must have certain characteristics. Lesh et al. (2003) outlined six fundamental principles for designing modeling activities: model construction, reality, model generalization, simple prototype, model externalization, and self-evaluation. This study aimed to examine the ninth-grade mathematics modeling activity book published by the Ministry of National Education [MoNE] (2020a) concerning the compatibility of modeling activities with Lesh et al.’s (2003). The document analysis method was used to collect data, and the content analysis method was used to analyze data. Results indicated that the modeling activities were generally compatible with the MEA design principles. Analyses showed that the activities were below the medium level regarding only the model generalization principle. Other principles were above the medium level, with the model construction, reality, and simple prototype principles close to a high level, while the model externalization and self-evaluation principles were slightly above the medium level. Consequently, the modeling activities in the ninth-grade mathematics modeling activity book generally met the design principles of MEA above the medium level. The results of the study provide a framework for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and teachers in the field of mathematical modeling.
