This thesis aims to analyze the United States’ foreign policy towards China during the Obama and Trump administrations. As China is rising militarily and economically, she has the potential to threaten the current global order. The increasing Chinese assertiveness in the Asia Pacific has raised concerns in the United States since it has the potential to challenge American hegemony and the current regional status quo. Accordingly, the US took measures to uphold its position. Consequently, every US president adopted different policies over time to deal with China. The dissertation examines and compares the Obama and Trump administration’s policies toward China regarding political, economic, and military affairs. In addition, the thesis mainly seeks to answer whether there is a continuity or change in the two presidents’ policies toward China compared to their predecessors.
