Cable axial load measurement device and buckling sensor development
Usalan, Emine Ceren; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Axial compression or tension carrying members may need to be monitored for their structural behaviors and/or damage detection. In this thesis, two different types of practical and cost efficient monitoring devices are proposed: The column buckling sensor and the cable tension measuring device. The columns of steel structures are prone to buckling due to their slender nature. The buckling sensor is developed by using strain gauges installed in half Wheatstone bridge and measures the strain level of the most ...
Continuation power flow and voltage stability in power systems
Keskin, Mehmet B; Ertaş, Arif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
This thesis investigates an important power system phenomenon, voltage stability, by using continuation power flow method. Voltage collapse scenario is presented which can be a serious result of voltage instability and the parameters that affect voltage collapse are discussed. In analyzing power system voltage stability, continuation power flow method is utilized which consists of successive load flows. This method is applied to a sample test system and Turkish Power System and load-voltage curves for sever...
Shaft transducerless vector control of the interior permanent magnet motor with speed and position estimation using high frequency signal injection and flux observer methods
Göksu, Ömer; Hava, Ahmet Masum; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this thesis, shaft transducerless vector control of Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) motor with speed and position estimation using saliency based high frequency signal injection and fundamental model based flux observer methods will be investigated. The magnetic saliency characteristic of a 2.2-kW IPM motor will be experimentally extracted by means of high frequency signal injection. High frequency signal injection method will be used to estimate the speed and position at zero and low speed based on the ...
Path optimization of flapping airfoils based on unsteady viscous flow solutions
Kaya, Mustafa; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2008)
The flapping path of a single airfoil and dual airfoils in a biplane configuration is optimized for maximum thrust and/or propulsive efficiency. Unsteady, low speed viscous flows are computed using a Navier-Stokes solver in a parallel computing environment. A gradient based algorithm and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) are employed for optimization. The evaluation of gradient vector components and the design of experiments for RSM, which require unsteady solutions, are also carried out in parallel. Paral...
