The profession of technical writer has gained great popularity all around the world in recent years; therefore, it is a charming option through the career path for graduates of Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department (CEIT). The aim of this study is to analyze the professional life knowledge and skill levels of CEIT graduates working in the field of technical documentation and to make suggestions for adding elective courses related to this field to the curriculum. A mixed-method has been applied to conduct this study in which surveys and semi structured interviews are used to investigate the professional competencies of CEIT graduates in the field of technical documentation. In this study, which was carried out with 40 different participants in total, survey and semi-structured interviews were applied. The research data were obtained by conducting semi-structured interviews with 10 employees who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study, and a survey was conducted with other 30 people who created technical documentation in different companies. First of all, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 participants. Afterward, a survey consisting of 20 questions, was applied to other 30 participants. The collected data have revealed that CEIT graduates working as technical writers found themselves competent in this profession and the curriculum courses were partially useful in preparing technical documentation. In addition, the majority of the participants stated that it would be quite beneficial to add the technical document preparation tools and S1000D standards that is international technical document preparation rules as an elective course to the curriculum.
