Ship-generated waste and cargo residues are the major sources of marine and air pollution in the marine ports. Handling and disposal processes are therefore essential not only because of the environmental concerns but also for its economic value. In practice, the waste is distillated for its valuable parts to extract industrial oil. However, the residue containing bitumen still causes pollution when disposed of as waste matter. Thus, this study investigates the use of waste residue as binder modifier. The physical and rheological properties of modified and base binders are evaluated according to conventional tests (i.e. penetration, softening point, ductility, viscosity, complex modulus determined using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR)) under un-aged, short-term and long-term aged conditions. The results indicated that the residue slightly deteriorated the high temperature properties but did not affect the low temperature properties of the binder. It was concluded that the residue has promising properties to be used as binder replacement, not as binder modifier.
