The Work of Recollection: Spirit

2010-01-01
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the meaning of Spirit (Geist) as it is conveyed through the end of Phenomenology of Spirit (1807), that is, in the final section »Absolute Knowing«.1 This final section, though it appears in a very condensed form, is particularly significant in its pointing to the end of one process and the beginning of a new one, that is, the transition from phenomenol-ogy to speculative philosophy. Given this particular significance, the guiding questions that I shall try to respond to are as follows: How does recollection (Erinnerung) play a role in bringing about this transition? What would be the significance of interpreting the meaning of Spirit as the work of recollection? In responding these questions, I shall attempt to outline how the initial condition for speculative philosophy consists in Spirit's self-accomplishment by the recollection of its outward configuration in and through experience, i. e. by the internalization of the shapes of its phenomenal existence.
