This thesis aims to investigate the development of request and apology speech acts and strategies used by Turkish young learners of English and to examine what extent formative assessment influences their acquisition of speech acts. To achieve these aims, the research was designed as a true- experimental study consisting of experimental and control groups. The participants in the study were divided into two groups as those with (experimental group) and without formative assessment (control group), and some stages (1st assessment and feedback) were not applied to the group without formative assessment to see the difference between groups. The current study was conducted in 5 different phases, which are pre-test, treatment procedure, 1st assessment, feedback, and post-test. The study was completed in 3 months during a term. Data were collected via multiple data collection instruments, such as camera recordings, worksheets, self- assessment forms, teacher observation forms. The purpose of using various data collection tools was to triangulate to collect reliable data. In addition, to make the data analysis more objective and reliable, the data collected at each stage was shared with another teacher, and the results and discussion section were shaped by comparing the results obtained by this teacher with the results of the researcher. The results obtained from recordings, forms, worksheets, and other teacher’s notes during the present study showed that formative assessment positively affects young learners’ motivation and self-confidence in addition to their language performance.
