In recent years, with innovations in universities and increased competition, the importance of research, one of the three missions of the university, has grown. Along with this increased importance, various developments and policies have been implemented to enhance the research performance of academics, who are vital vectors of universities. In this study, the purpose was to examine the perception of academics on their research performance in research universities and understand how it differs for the demographic and background characteristics of academics. The cross-sectional survey was the design of this study. Four research universities were chosen from Ankara, and data was collected from 100 academic staff members in these universities. Short Multidisciplinary Research Performance Questionnaire (SMRPQ) was used for data collection. The latest version of SPSS is used for descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. To support the findings, both closed and open-ended questions were asked. The results indicated that academics' perceptions of research performance were above average and mostly influenced by institutional and organizational factors. Additionally, the study found a slight positive correlation between research performance and the year after obtaining a Ph.D. Furthermore, there was a significant interaction effect between gender and marital status on academics' perceptions of their research performance. These results suggest a need to invest mainly in the individual and institutional factors and provide insight into the academics' research performance for policymakers to develop alternative policies for research performance assessments.
