This thesis aims to relate the distinction between emotive and cognitive reasoning in the moral and political philosophy. The distinction refers to automatic and controlled processes of thinking; the former relates to the emotional and instinctive reaction to the given problem whereas the latter is related to a contemplative and more proactive manner. Emotive reasoning tends to be made automatically whereas cognitive reasoning is produced as a result of a controlled process. In this regard, this thesis argues that acknowledging and understanding the distinction between these types of reasoning could be utilized for the betterment of the way moral/political philosophy is put into practice because with this distinction, it is possible to implement a more impartial and realistic point of view in these philosophical fields. In other words, this thesis aims to establish the relationship between emotive-cognitive reasoning distinction and ethics-political philosophy on the one hand, and critically evaluate how this distinction could be utilized for normatively improving these fields on the other. In order to understand this distinction properly, a detailed investigation of studies in neuro-ethics and neuro-politics, together with evolutionary psychology that gives reference to this distinction is essential. In the process, the characteristic differentiation between descriptive and normative statements will be taken into account, on the basis of Hume’s distinction between is-ought statements and Moore’s naturalistic fallacy, so that how descriptive features of emotive-cognitive reasoning would be used for normative argumentation could be shown.
