This study focuses on the validity and peculiarities of the spatial dimension of memory while re-evaluating collective memory as the guiding concept. The main objective is to theoretically examine collective and individual memory within urban space, and understand their spatial dimensions in the existing literature within the broader context of urban studies. This examination is substantiated by insights from various disciplines, including sociology, architecture, and psychology. By doing this, the research aims to reveal the site and user-specific spatial values of memory, primarily through a case study at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Ankara Campus and secondarily at the Faculty of Architecture. Related to the METU Campus, the research undertakes an extensive archival study, conducts semi-structured interviews, and gathers mental maps from twenty-four participants through exploratory research to chart memory narratives and map users’ spatial experiences. The results reveal several spatial dimensions of memory such as memory path, hidden spaces, people-associated spaces, void spaces, focal spaces, singular rituals, and personal routes. The research argues that despite the ongoing significance of collective memory, urban studies should not overlook the everchanging and unique memories of individuals as these memories can significantly contribute to the preservation and enhancement of better living environments for people.
