This thesis investigates low-profile printed antennas used as ultra-wideband (UWB) radar antennas in through-the-wall and ground-penetrating radars, and low-profile antenna to be used in TWR applications is analyzed, designed, and fabricated. Through the-wall-radars are used to look inside and behind the walls and receive information about the scene beyond the walls. UWB antennas are generally preferred by their wide operating frequency ranges and high pulse fidelity features. A four-element E-Patch antenna array is fabricated and tested, and results are compared with full-wave simulation results. Simulation results are obtained by using a full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation software ANSYS HFSS® program. Low-profile printed E-patch antennas with stand-alone, and array configurations result from different wall materials and different distance parameters are designed by using HFSS software. In addition, a bistatic radar set up with a corner reflector as a target object is simulated using HFSS software. Using a fabricated four-element E-Patch antenna array as a receiver and transmitter sensor, a prototype through-the-wall radar setup is installed. Monostatic radar results are taken with handheld VNA to compare measurement results with the simulated results.
