Technology has become increasingly important insofar as markets have become more and more competitive in the textile and clothing industries which has been the key industrial earner of foreign exchange and one of the largest industrial employers in many developing countries. The purpose of this study is to examine the diffusion of new technology in the world textile industry and to assess the impact of new technology on the international competitiveness of the Turkish ‘catile industry and its major competitors in export markets. Adopting new technology is now considered to be the key element for international competitiveness. Therefore, this study aims at highlighting the effect of adopting technological innovations on the export performance of the textile industry and it concludes, from the analysis of trends in installed capacities of new technology and export values of textile and clothing products in Turkey and in its major competitors — Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea —, that adoption of new textile technology has generally improved international competitveness and export performance.
