Particle tracking modeling of marine sediment pollution
Özdemir, Rabia Tuğçe; Durgut, İsmail; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2015)
Drilling cuttings, chemicals and drilling mud that are discharged to the sea during drilling in offshore, affect sediment habitat at sea floor. The main stressors describing the impact of discharges on marine sediment are, burial, toxicity and free oxygen depletion. In order to determine the effects of mixing of the discharged material in the sediment column, one dimensional particle tracking model that utilizes the random walk method was developed for estimating the free oxygen, natural carbon and added ch...
Vibration exposure of front seat car passengers
Erol, Tuğra; Tarman, Işık Hakan; Department of Engineering Sciences (2004)
Vibration in the vehicle environment has long been investigated considering the driver's exposure. However not only drivers but also the front seat car passengers are exposed to considerable amount of vibration. In order to investigate the phenomenon, this research consisted of three stages. In the first stage of the study, model analysis has been carried out. Based on the results it has been suggested that increased damping in the lumbar area in contact with the backrest can decrease the vibration transmis...
Sedimentary Records of Past Earthquakes during the Last 2400 Years in Botnsvatn Lake on the Húsavík-Flatey Fault, North Iceland
Avşar, Ulaş; Geirsdttir, Aslaug; Thordarson, Thor; Miller, Gifford (2014-12-19)
The Húsavík-Flatey Fault (HFF), which is a part of the Tjörnes Fracture Zone (TFZ) in North Iceland, is a ~100 km-long dextral strike-slip fault. The fault has produced many magnitude 6-7 earthquakes in the past; however, the historical earthquake record in the region is mostly limited to the past 300 years. Almost 80% of the HFF is offshore. At the on-land part of the fault, glacial morphology and lack of well-developed fluvial systems limit the number of sites having faulting-related sedimentation, which ...
Municipal sludge minimization: evaluation of ultrasonic and acidic pretreatment methods and their subsequent effects on anaerobic digestion
Apul, Onur Güven; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2009)
Sludge management is one of the most difficult and expensive problems in wastewater treatment plant operation. Consequently, ‘sludge minimization’ concept arose to solve the excess sludge production by sludge pretreatment. Sludge pretreatment converts the waste sludge into a more bioavailable substrate for anaerobic digestion and leads to an enhanced degradation. The enhanced degradation results in more organic reduction and more biogas production. Therefore, sludge pretreatment is a means of improving slud...
Sediment and water phosphorus characteristics in a pond of spring origin, Sakaryabasi springs basin, Turkey
Pulatsü, Serap; Akçora, Akasya; Köksal, Fatma (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2003-03-01)
The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in concentrations of phosphorus and iron in pondwater and porewater in the littoral zone of Sakaryabasi-Kirkgiz pond in central Turkey. The pond supplies water to the Rainbow Trout Fish Culture and Research Station in four months in which temperatures do not show a strong variation (16degreesC-22degreesC). Concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus were 4- to 5-fold higher in porewater than in pondwater; thus, diffusion of SRP from porewater to pondw...
