Quantitative measurement of muscle relaxation using evoked EMG is usually based on peak, or rectified-integrated values. In this study, EMG waveforms, obtained from rats in response to train-of-four stimuli applied every 15 seconds during pancuronium infusion, are analyzed to derive information about the validity and accuracy of these methods. It is concluded that shape variations must be considered for correct monitoring of relaxation. In experiments with nonbiphasic EMG responses, different sensitivity of constituting biphasic components to drugs is proposed as a mechanism to explain relaxant-induced waveform variations. Experimental procedures are explained, and the results of modeling studies are presented.
