Ground improvement is a common practice in the construction industry, aiming to address low-bearing capacities, settlement issues, and other geotechnical concerns. This study explores the potential of electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as a chemical stabilizer for ground improvement. EAFS is a granular material that forms during the melting and refining of scrap steel in the electric arc furnace, a crucial step in the steel production process. Utilized EAFS was rich in iron oxide (Fe2O3), calcium oxide (CaO), and silicon dioxide (SiO2). Furthermore, the XRD analysis revealed that the slag contains a significant amount of calcium silicate ((CaO)2(SiO2)). Considering the high iron dioxide (Fe2O3) content, the grindability curve for the EAFS was also prepared. The ground slag was blended into clayey soil at different ratios (5 %, 10 % and 15 %). The ground improvement performance was evaluated through unconfined compressive strength and direct shear tests. The results showed that soil mixtures with 10 and 15 % EAFS entrained contribute to compressive strength by increasing it to more than 2 times than that of the specimens that contain only soil.
