A fait accompli: transformation of media structures in Turkey

1994
Kaya, A. Raşit
The author claims that one for the results of the market-based and outward oriented strategy for economic 'modernization' in the 1980s was Turkey's transition into a more information-based economy and a concomitant transformation of its media structures. This transformation has led the Turkish Press into a process of ownership concentration and a sensationalist type of content. The market forces have neutralised in practice the constitutional framework over television and radio, and the outcome of this process without the preparation of an initial judicial basis was a chaotic development. The author argues that the political parties and the government in Turkey react in ways that demonstrate the lack of any coherent media policy, a situation which in effect facilitates the big business' corporate interests.
