Two contrary explanations of intra-industry trade expansion are confronted, which refer to intra-industry trade in consumer goods and in intermediates, respectively. Analysing Spain's and Turkey's intra-industry trade during the recent two decades, it is found that the two approaches do not exclude each other, but can be applied to different phases in the course of industrial development. In the first phase, intra-industry trade expansion was mainly due to intensified vertical specialization in trade with the industrial countries. In the second phase, intra-industry trade rose extraordinarily in trade of consumer goods.
