Alkali barium glasses in the SiO2, Al2O3, LiO2, K2O, Na2O, and BaO system were prepared using high-purity powders by the melt-quench technique to evaluate the compatibility of these glasses for hermetic sealing. The melting process took place at the laboratory conditions at 1550 °C for 30 min. Six different glasses with varying Na2O and K2O content were produced. The total Na2O + K2O content in the glasses was kept constant at 15 wt% but, the Na2O/K2O ratio was adjusted. Glasses were cast into a molybdenum mold to get rectangular prism shaped samples for the density, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and chemical durability measurements. Results indicated that even a slight change in Na2O/K2O led to notable changes in the glass properties. Glass pellets were subsequently sealed with 304 stainless steel using different sealing profiles under argon gas. The results revealed that the sealing and crystallization temperature of the sealing profile, and the composition of the glass have a profound effect in the microstructure of the compression sealing developed between the alkali barium glass and 304 stainless steels.
