Enzymatic production of xylooligosaccharides from cotton stalks
Akpinar, Ozlem; Ak, Ozlem; Kavas, Aysegul; Bakir, Ufuk; Yılmaz, Levent (2007-07-11)
Xylooligosaccharide (XO) production was performed from xylan, which was obtained by alkali extraction from cotton stalk, a major agricultural waste in Turkey. Enzymatic hydrolysis was selected to prevent byproduct formation such as xylose and furfural. Xylan was hydrolyzed using a commercial xylanase preparation, and the effects of pH, temperature, hydrolysis period, and substrate and enzyme concentrations on the XO yield and degree of polymerization (DP) were investigated. Cotton stalk contains about 21% x...
Enzymatic hydrolysis of fruit peels and other lignocellulosic biomass as a source of sugar for fermentation
Poçan, Pelin; Öztop, Halil Mecit; Hamamcı, Haluk; Department of Food Engineering (2015)
In this study, enzymatic hydrolysis of corn cobs, orange and pomegranate peels were evaluated. For the hydrolysis of corn cobs, effect of alkaline pretreatment was examined and it was found that glucose and reducing sugar yield (%) for the pretreated corn cobs increased from 7% to 21.5% and 14% to 33.6% respectively. Effect of cellobiase loading on hydrolysis efficiency was also investigated. It was observed that when cellobiase was added to hydrolysate in addition to cellulase, glucose and total reducing s...
Enzymatic Mineralization of Hydrogels for Bone Tissue Engineering by Incorporation of Alkaline Phosphatase
Douglas, Timothy E. L.; Messersmith, Philip B.; Chasan, Safak; Mikos, Antonios G.; de Mulder, Eric L. W.; Dickson, Glenn; Schaubroeck, David; Balcaen, Lieve; Vanhaecke, Frank; Dubruel, Peter; Jansen, John A.; Leeuwenburgh, Sander C. G. (Wiley, 2012-08-01)
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), an enzyme involved in mineralization of bone, is incorporated into three hydrogel biomaterials to induce their mineralization with calcium phosphate (CaP). These are collagen type I, a mussel-protein-inspired adhesive consisting of PEG substituted with catechol groups, cPEG, and the PEG/fumaric acid copolymer OPF. After incubation in Ca-GP solution, FTIR, EDS, SEM, XRD, SAED, ICP-OES, and von Kossa staining confirm CaP formation. The amount of mineral formed decreases in the orde...
Enzymatically induced mineralization of platelet-rich fibrin
Douglas, Timothy E. L.; Gassling, Volker; Declercq, Heidi A.; Purcz, Nicolai; Pamula, Elzbieta; Haugen, Havard J.; Chasan, Safak; de Mulder, Eric L. W.; Jansen, John A.; Leeuwenburgh, Sander C. G. (Wiley, 2012-05-01)
Membranes of the autologous blood-derived biomaterial platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) were functionalized by incorporation of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), an enzyme involved in mineralization of bone, and subsequently incubated in calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) solution to induce PRFs mineralization with calcium phosphate (CaP) to improve PRFs suitability as a material for bone replacement. Incorporated ALP retained its bioactivity and induced formation of CaP material within PRF membranes, as confirmed by SEM, ...
Enzymatic hydrolysis of orange bagasse and effect of filtration on lactic acid fermentation
Baltaci, Saadet Fatma; Hamamcı, Haluk (2020-04-01)
Along with the general trend of reducing waste in the agro-industrial sector, new methods are sought to utilize side or waste products. With this purpose, we examined the utilization of orange bagasse (OB) for Ca-lactate production via enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. The hydrolysis of OB was carried in both dried and fresh forms with cellulolytic and pectinolytic enzymes to obtain a reasonable amount of fermentable sugars for further lactic acid fermentation. A novel industrial approach was studied t...
