This paper examines the expenditure patterns of urban and rural households in Turkey using the 1987 data and determines the similarities and differences between the two sectors as well as between the expenditure groups. The differences between the behaviours of people at different income levels are also found out. Nine functional forms of Engel curves are used to determine the most suitable econometric equations for ten expenditure groups. Only food expenditures category is found to be a necessity. Furniture, house services, transportation and cultural expenditures are found to be luxuries at each sector and at every income level. Clothing and restaurant expenditures were luxuries too, but their elasticity figures inclined towards unity at higher income levels. Health seems to be neither a necessity nor a luxury. The same can be said for personal care, excluding rural sector. None of the functional forms was suitable for housing expenditures.
