The paper is an overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI) discipline and its applications in credit analysis with the detailed discussions of the four popular AI systems. It starts with a background on AI including definitions of terms and a brief history of the field. After mentioning a series of applications in the credit analysis domain, four such systems are discussed: Lending Assistant, Credit Assistant, CUBUS, and MOCCA. AI was a big hype in the early 1980s with huge expectations and it was a major let down at the end of the decade when the excitement in academic research did not lead to many successful results in real life. Finance, and especially credit analysis has been one exception where several practical applications have been developed and used daily.
