Why Do So Many Attempts to Stop High Inflations Fail?

Bleaney , Michael
The frequent failure of attempts to stop high inflations suggests that governments are constrained in framing effective stabilisation programmes. A model is developed in which some groups have some degree of interest in continuing inflation, and will support stabilisation only if the programme is designed so as to placate them. However this may constrain the programme to have only a small probability of success.
