Nuri Saryal

He was born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1929. He graduated from Ankara Turkish Maarif Society (TED) in 1941. He completed his English language education at Robert College Engineering School between 1947 and 1948. He graduated from Robert College Mechanical Department in 1952 as an honor student and received his Mechanical Engineering diploma. He completed his master's degree at Purdue (Indiana) University and his doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin. In 1962, he became an Assistant Professor at METU Mechanical Engineering Department. He served as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department between 1963 and 1965, and as Vice Rector between 1964 and 1969. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1966. Prof. dr. Between 1970 and 1972, as an A.von Humboldt Foundation scholar, Nuri Saryal gave lectures, conducted research, and published textbooks at Munich Technical University in Germany. In 1975, he was promoted to professorship at METU Mechanical Engineering Department. Prof. Saryal was appointed as METU Deputy Rector in 1977. He enabled METU, which was closed due to boycott, to open and start education under difficult conditions. In 1979, he left the Rectorate voluntarily and did research for three months at the Technical University of Stuttgart, Germany. Between 1979 and 1980, he was invited to the Technical University of Munich and taught and conducted research for two semesters. In 1980, he started working as a professor at METU again. Prof. Saryal was presented to Saryal in 1992 by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. He was awarded the first class 'High Order of Merit' by Weizsaecker. Prof. Saryal has a book called "My METU Memories".
