Estimating the number-weighted equivalents of the mass-weighted size distribution functions
Camalan, Mahmut (Elsevier BV, 2020-06-01)
The number-weighted particle size distributions are difficult to be estimated experimentally. This study offers a simple conversion method to convert mass-weighted distributions to their number-weighted equivalents. Besides, the number-weighted equivalents of the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann, Gaudin-Meloy, Pareto, and Rosin-Rammler distributions were determined by the conversion method. The accuracy of the method was successfully confirmed on the artificial populations generated from the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann, R...
Estimating Density of Wireless Networks in Practice
Eroğlu, Alperen; Onur, Ertan; Oğuztüzün, Mehmet Halit S. (2015-09-02)
Density of a wireless network drastically impacts its performance. Adapting the networking protocols at run-time to density changes, which may not be predictable in advance, may improve the network performance. Estimating the density of a wireless network is the challenge we address in this paper. A wireless node may locally estimate the network density by measuring the received signal strength (RSS) of packets sent by its neighbours. However, RSS is prone to large- and small-scale fading, and this phenomen...
Estimating rock mass properties using Monte Carlo simulation: Ankara andesites
Sari, Mehmet; Karpuz, Celal; Ayday, Can (2010-07-01)
In the paper, a previously introduced method (Sari, 2009) is applied to the problem of estimating the rock mass properties of Ankara andesites. For this purpose, appropriate closed form (parametric) distributions are described for intact rock and discontinuity parameters of the Ankara andesites at three distinct weathering grades. Then, these distributions are included as inputs in the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) classification system prepared in a spreadsheet model. A stochastic analysis is carried out to evalu...
Estimating parameters in autoregressive models in non-normal situations: Asymmetric innovations
Akkaya, Ayşen (2001-01-01)
The estimation of coefficients in a simple autoregressive model is considered in a supposedly difficult situation where the innovations have an asymmetric distribution. Two distributions, gamma and generalized logistic, are considered for illustration. Closed form estimators are obtained and shown to be efficient and robust. Efficiencies of least squares estimators are evaluated and shown to be very low. This work is an extension of that of Tiku, Wong and Bian [1] who give solutions for a simple AR(I) model
Estimating the angle of total pi-electron energy
Gutman, I; Türker, Burhan Lemi (Elsevier BV, 2004-01-23)
The angle theta of total pi-electron energy of an alternant hydrocarbon is defined via: E-pi = 2rootne cos theta, where 2n or 2n + 1 is the number vertices and e the number of edges of the molecular graph, and E-pi is the respective HMO total pi-electron energy. The angle theta is sensitive to the structural differences between isomeric alternant hydrocarbons. Recently [J. Mol. Struct. (Theochem) 584 (2002) 183] an identity cos theta = [(e + n)/(2rootne)](1 + alpha - rootalpha2 + 2alpha) has been deduced, w...
