Based on his newspaper articles, this thesis deals with Salih Zeki’s intellectual endeavor concerning time in the late Ottoman Empire, during which the Ottoman Empire underwent a substantial transformation through technology, including railways, telegraphs, etc. To integrate the empire with the broader world, time was essential since different time practices were used in the Ottoman Empire. Salih Zeki, a prominent scientist and intellectual, closely followed technological and scientific developments that would be integrated into the Ottoman Empire. The further integration of the Ottoman Empire with Europe through different channels and the modernization of its institutions were some of the problems he contemplated. In various newspapers and journals, Salih Zeki wrote articles related to clocks, time, and calendars, all of which are analyzed in this thesis. Therefore, Salih Zeki and his writings on time and standardization of clocks in the late Ottoman Empire was investigated. Through such an examination, this thesis attempts to understand the mindset of Salih Zeki and the period he was a part of.
