DISTRIBUTION OF CETACEAN AND THEIR FORAGING HABITATS IN THE BLACK SEA
Başkır, Saba; Gücü , Ali Cemal; Department of Chemical Oceanography (2019-10-04)
Cetacean hunting was banned in Turkey in 1983. In the following decades, as the ecological shifts in the Black Sea occur, over-increase in the cetacean populations were hypothesized as the cause of the decline in economically valuable pelagic fish species like Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and Sprat (Sprattus sprattus). These arguments create the pressure of re-legalization of direct killing of cetaceans, whom are assumed to be foraging mainly on Anchovy. These arguments, although raise concerns from the...
Distribution of tin in the northeastern Mediterranean
Yemeni̇ci̇ğlu, Semal; Saydam, Cemal; Sali̇hoğlu, İlkay (Elsevier BV, 1987)
Concentrations of tin, one of the naturally methylated elements, was determined in sea water, sediments and organisms, collected from the Northeastern Mediterranean. A hydride generation technique was employed, in which the tin and methyltin, were converted to their hydrides. The hydrides produced were detected by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. On the average, the inorganic tin content of sea water samples ranged between 1.1–236 ng/1. Although the dominant methyltin species was dimethyltin, all forms ...
Distribution and abundance of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) and its zooplankton food in the Black Sea
Mutlu, E (2001-02-01)
The distribution of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita Linnaeus, 1758) in the Black Sea was determined from plankton samples collected above the anoxic zone (maximum depth 200 m) in the summer, winter and spring during 1991-1995. Distribution was patchy. Average biomass ranged from 98 to 380 g m(-2), and abundance varied from 2 to 14 individuals m(-2). Biomass and abundance peaked in late spring and summer. The distribution was correlated with hydrographic features in the Black Sea, with higher concentrations o...
