This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of short-term design exercises conducted within architecture schools in Turkiye, with a specific focus on the use of architectural sketch problems in three renowned institutions: Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul Technical University, and Middle East Technical University. Utilizing a comparative research framework, the study investigates the nuances of architectural sketch problems, examining methodologies, procedures, instructional approaches, evaluation criteria, and pedagogical consequences associated with sketch problems at these institutions. The research methodology incorporates interviews with scholars, along with an analysis of exam materials, to elucidate unique practices and shared characteristics in using short-term design exercises as an assessment tool. By exploring the tradition and application of sketch problems in architectural education in Turkiye, this research aims to provide insights into effective pedagogical strategies, identify challenges of short-term design tasks, and propose recommendations for enhancing the utilization of architectural sketch problems in architecture schools in Turkiye. The findings of this comparative analysis will contribute to supporting architectural education practices and fostering a deeper understanding of the role of short-term design exercises in evaluating architectural design proficiency.
